Cell lysis via addition of water. a Water (30 mL) was added to the cell pellet corresponding to 1 L of the culture, and the mixture was stirred and allowed to stand in the dark. Each cyanobacterial supernatant and culture were placed in a 96-well plate and incubated for 12 days in the dark as shown at the top. Absorbance (OD618) of the solution and supernatant were measured daily under these conditions for determining phycocyanin content. Lysis ratio is shown at the bottom. The mean of the values obtained from three independent experiments is shown together with standard errors. b Live cells (0 day) and lysed or live cells (8 days) under the static/dark conditions were observed using an optical microscope
